Dairy production in Pakistan

The dairy industry’s main ingredient is milk, which is processed at the dairy plants to produce a variety of dairy products. The average daily production of milk in Pakistan is estimated at approximately 95 million liters. Punjab is the leading province in milk production with a share of around 80%.
Out of the total production of 95 million liters of milk per day, about 55% is consumed at source in the countryside while the remaining 45% is traded in urban centers. Most of the traded milk is marketed un-processed and currently, only about 2.5 to 3 percent of the traded milk is processed by the dairy industry in Pakistan.
Processed liquid milk in the form of Pasteurized or Ultra Heat Treated (UHT) milk is the main dairy product in Pakistan while other products include Dry Powdered Milk, Cream, Butter, Butter Oil, Yogurt, Cheese and ice cream. Presently, about 13 units in the organized sector are engaged in the production of various dairy products. Majority of the dairy plants are located in the vicinity of Lahore, which serves as the hub of this industry (Essays, November 2018).

Pakistan is the fourth largest milk-producing country in the world, with dairy and livestock’s contribution to the national GDP at a staggering 11%.


Live a stock sector in the glow of economic survey of PAK(2017-2018)                                                                                                                                                    During 2017-18, livestock contributed  58.9 percent to the agriculture value-added and 11.1 percent to the overall GDP compared to 58.9 percent and 11.3 percent during the corresponding period last year, respectively. The gross value addition of livestock at a constant cost factor of 2005-06 has increased from Rs. 1,327 billion (2016-17) to Rs. 1,377 billion (2017-18), showing an increase of 3.8 percent over the same period last year (Pakistan, 2018).

South Asia is again the fastest-growing region in the world. The growth rate in India picked up in the second half of 2017 after five consecutive quarters of deceleration. Despite the acceleration of economic growth in destination markets, export performance remains disappointing throughout the region, while imports increased rapidly. Although remittances were recovering, however, current account deficits continued to widen. The widening of the current account deficit resulted in currency depreciation. Thus, not only Pakistani rupee but also Indian rupee depreciated. However, it is expected that this depreciation of currency will support improvement in external balance (Pakistan, 2018).
Per capita income is one of the most widely used measures of the general well being in an economy. It is computed by dividing National Income (GNI) by population while   During FY2018, per capita income increased by 0.5 percent to $1,641. As per PBS, per capita income during 2016-17 (Rs162230) (1641dollar) is based on provisional figures of Population Census 2017 held on March 2017 (Pakistan, 2018)

Pakistan imports packed milk worth Rs 48.89 billion in three years
According to a report and figures of the Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR)

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan has imported 1,85,749 metric tons packed milk worth Rs 50 billion from 49 countries, but it is not known about the animals to which the imported milk is related to.
There is no system to find out that imported packed milk belongs to which animal or it is Hilal or Haram. The milk is imported in Pakistan in various forms, packaging and in compositions. The total quantity and value of milk imported during the last three years are 1,85,749 metric tons amounted to Rs 49.89 billion.
According to the FBR, computerized customs clearance system does not capture information and data of the animals to which the imported milk is related to.
Pakistan imported 61,211 metric ton packed milk worth Rs 18.25 billion in 2014-15 and 68,247 metric tons worth Rs 17.78 billion in 2015-16 while during 2016-17 Pakistan imported 56,291 metric tons of milk worth Rs 13.86 billion.
 Countries from which Pakistan import milk:                                                                                                                                      It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan is importing packed milk from the United States, New Zealand, France, Germany, Belgium, Ukraine, Ireland, United Kingdom, India, Sri Lanka, Holland, Singapore, Brazil, Finland, Australia, Canada, Denmark, China, Thailand, South Africa, Japan, Korea and other countries of the European Union (Revenue, 2018).
